More Than the Grind: Finding Your God-Given Calling in a Hustle Culture

This time of year, just before Labor Day, something happens in the air. Summer wraps up, fall starts whispering, and suddenly everyone around you seems to be moving — starting new jobs, beginning college semesters, launching businesses, posting wins on social media. If you are in your twenties and still figuring out your path, it can feel like you are the only one standing still.

But here is what nobody tells you in the middle of all that noise: hustle is not a calling. Grinding until you break is not the goal. And your worth is not measured by your output.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23

That verse does not say “work yourself into the ground.” It says work with your whole heart — because there is a difference between working from purpose and working from fear. One builds you up. The other burns you out.

The World Has a Version of Success. God Has a Better One.

Social media will tell you that by 25 you should have a six-figure salary, a side hustle, a plan, and a perfectly curated life. That kind of pressure is real — and for so many young adults, it is quietly suffocating. You second-guess your gifts, compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter ten, and wonder if God even has a place for you in this loud, fast-moving world.

He does. And it is better than anything the algorithm could offer you.

God’s version of success is not about how impressive your résumé looks. It is about doing what you were made to do, in the way only you can do it, for a purpose bigger than yourself. That might look like a classroom, a courtroom, a kitchen, a creative studio, or a community that needs your presence. The shape of your calling is unique — and it does not need to match anyone else’s.

Rest Is Not the Enemy of Progress

Labor Day was built on the idea that workers deserve rest. God thought of that long before any federal holiday. The Sabbath was not an afterthought — it was woven into creation itself. Even God rested. And He is inviting you to do the same.

If you have been running on empty, chasing validation through achievement, or feeling like you have to earn your worth — this is your invitation to stop. Not forever. Just long enough to hear what God is saying to you underneath all the noise. Because clarity does not usually come at your busiest. It comes in the quiet.

You are allowed to slow down. You are allowed to be in a season of preparation. You are allowed to not have it all figured out. That is not failure — that is faith.

You Were Made for More Than a Paycheck

At Abundant Life Christian Church, we believe that every young adult carries a God-given assignment — and that your twenties are not wasted years, they are formation years. This is the season where your faith gets built, your character gets shaped, and your sense of calling gets refined. We do not want you to walk through it alone.

Whether you are starting fresh, starting over, or just starting to wonder what your life is really supposed to look like — we have a seat for you. Come worship with us this Sunday at our Manchester or Eastman campus, or join us online. And if you are ready to go deeper, explore our Bible College — designed for people like you who want to grow in purpose, not just information.

Your calling is already inside you. Come find out what God is saying about it.
